Woolworths

Woolworths is Australia’s largest supermarket, and biggest private employer with over 115,000 employees across many different brands. My role has been to lead the UI on the flagship iOS and Android apps.

A brief history

As little as two years ago the app was in dire straits, with no regular updates, and no clear direction. A quick project to uplift the UI was completed in early 2018. Now no longer neglected, showing huge growth, a real focus has been on providing an unparalleled user experience.

Making a new home
Since the first version of the app, users have been landing on a list of products. This experience has been sub-par and uninspiring. We set out to create a personalised experience that catered for individuals unique needs. Driven by the back end, the homepage has been built to expose relevant content to users based on what they engage with.

Optimising a checkout experience

How do you create a new checkout that does $8.4M monthly and not effect the 6.2% CR? Countless concepts, tests, and iterations. After a huge 6 month project I'm stoked that conversion rate is up 16% to 7.2% and we're now doing over $33M monthly.

Designed to scale

As the design team has scaled quite quickly, and with the design language evolving, the need for a design system was imperative. This has not only assisted the design team, but also the developers for things like consistency of naming conventions and styles used.

Video killed the boring slide deck

During my time at Woolworths I have been tasked with creating a number of videos (throwback to my post-production video editor days). I picked two different videos to showcase a range of skillsets used while creating video content for internal purposes.

Company Overview
Woolworths is Australia's largest supermarket and private employer, with over 115,000 employees. Recognising the shift in shopping habits to online, a division was formed called WooliesX. Created to merge digital, ECOM, & Woolworths Rewards teams, WooliesX functions like a startup but with the backing of a retail giant.
My Contributions
I joined WooliesX in September 2017 and have been loving the autonomy to create within such a large company. My role has been to lead the UI on the flagship iOS and Android apps.
For 6 months I was the only UI designer, after the team transitioned from an agency outsourced product to an internal one. I have since helped build and empower a team of 7 designers; created concepts through to high fidelity designs; assisted in designing and maintaining an asset library; built prototypes for user testing; and much more.
Since joining, the app has more than doubled MAUs to over 500,000 and tripled sales volume to over $33M monthly.
